The MC Chap baseball team has qualified for the 2018 NJCAA Region 5 Baseball Tournament to be played at Grand Prairie Airhog Stadium in Grand Prairie, TX (May 11-15). The Chaps are scheduled to face NTJCAC runner-up McLennan Community College (40-14) on Friday, May 11th @ 5:00 p.m. (CST) in a game between familiar opponents. The Chaps opened the 2018 season with a three game series in Waco, TX at McLennan CC, with the Highlanders taking all three games.

McLennan is led by former, long-time Baylor University baseball assistant Mitch Thompson who is in his fifth year at the helm. Midland College is led by former assistant, Hector Rodriguez who was named head coach of the Chaps last summer after the departure of David Coleman.

Under Rodriguez, the Chaps have grown more consistent and lethal on offense. Midland College currently ranks in second place nationally with 42 triples, 5th in extra base hits (258) and total bases (1068), 6th in homeruns (91), 7th in slugging percentage .620), 8th in runs batted in (480) and 9th in runs scored with 529.

Additionally Bullinger has been a steadying influence on the mound this season appearing in 12 games, going 4-1 with two saves and a 6.35 ERA.

Also contributing at the plate are freshman infielder, Frainyer Chavez (Valencia, Venezuela) and sophomore Tommy Gillman (Littleton, CO). Chavez is batting .385 with 76 hits, including 11 doubles, four triples and is tied for the team lead in homeruns (13). Gillman is hitting .367 with a .729 slugging percentage. He has recorded 65 hits, with 18 doubles, five triples and 12 homeruns. Bullinger is a transfer from UTSA, while Gillman comes to MC from Texas A&M.

Midland College used an assortment of pitchers early this season before settling on sophomore starters Logan McCrummen (Lubbock, TX) who is 4-6 (65.1 innings pitched) in 13 appearances and an ERA of 7.16 and Noel Solis (Brownsville, TX) who is 5-0 in 15 appearances (47 innings pitched) with a 9.57 ERA. MC’s Aaron Weseman (Frisco, TX) has recorded a 4-0 record in 14 appearances (43.2 innings pitched), including one save and one complete game this season.
