2019 FIBA World Cup in Beijing, China

Two former members of the Midland College Chaparrals basketball team are participating in the 2019 FIBA World Cup men’s basketball tournament in Beijing, China. Former Chaps Guy Landry Edi (2009-2010, 2010-2011) and Tiegbe Bamba (2012-2013) are members of the team representing Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) in the competition.

Edi finished his college basketball career at Gonzaga University, while Bamba played collegiately for two years at Portland State University following his one season with Midland College. Bamba played his freshman year at Snow College in Utah.

Cote d’Ivore joins China, Venezuela and Poland in Group A. The USA team is in Group E along with Turkey, the Czech Republic and Japan. There are eight “groups” comprised of four teams per group 32 total teams). Only the top two teams from each group will advance to the second round of the world championship tournament.

Cote d’Ivoire began play on Saturday, August 31st with an opening round game versus the host team, China. China won the contest 70-55 with Edi logging just over 28 minutes of playing time, scoring 10 points along with three rebounds, one steal and one assist. Bamba recorded three points, one rebound and one assist in just over 18 minutes.

Cote d’Ivoire also suffered a loss in their second round game versus Venezuela to the tune of 87-71 on Monday, September 2nd. Versus Venezuela Bamba scored 13 points in 19 minutes. He also recorded two rebounds and one steal in the contest. For his part Edi played 29 minutes, scoring 11 points along with four rebounds.

Cote d’Ivoire will see their next action on Wednesday, September 4th versus Poland in the final game of group play.
