MIDLAND, TEXAS - Midland College baseball coach Hector Rodriguez likes for his No. 1 starter on the mound to bring some confidence and the ability to help set a tone for the rest of the series.
Rodriguez believes he's found what he was looking for in freshman left-handed pitcher Alizaeh Gutierrez, a New Mexico State University transfer. Gutierrez is expected to get the start in the first game of a doubleheader at noon today when the Chaparrals open their season against No. 5-ranked McLennan Community College at Christensen Stadium.
"He comes in and gets after it," Rodriguez said. "He's kind of got the moxy of being the number one starter."
Gutierrez, who set a single-season school record at El Paso Montwood with 118 strikeouts, said he tries to bring that confidence every time he steps on the mound ...
