C LARENDON, TEXAS - The Midland College baseball team split a Western Junior College Athletic Conference doubleheader at Clarendon College on Friday, winning 13-1 in the first game before dropping the second game, 9-8.
Thanks to Howard College winning two games at Odessa College on Friday, the Hawks are the WJCAC champions as they hold a two-game lead on MC and hold the tiebreaker over the Chaparrals heading into the final two games of the regular season today.
The Chaps (27-13, 17-5 in WJCAC) dominated in the first game against the Bulldogs as Cameron Dayton drove in four runs and had two doubles to lead MC. Tyler Wulfert was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored; Chris Garcia had two hits and drove in two runs; and Ryan Blackwell was 2-for-2 with a double and three runs scored.
On the mound, Bo Blessie got the win after he allowed one run on four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts over four innings of work.
Clarendon's Victor Plaz hit a solo home run to left with one out in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Bulldogs to a win in the back-and-forth second game.
MC had 15 hits but committed five errors, which led to five unearned runs.
Garcia was 3-for-4 to lead MC at the plate; Dayton had two hits and three RBI; Blackwell had two hits and two RBI; while Luke Bumpus, and Jarred Gibson each added two hits.
The teams will play another doubleheader beginning at noon today to close out the regular season.
