CLARENDON, TEXAS - The Midland College baseball team ended up with a series split at Clarendon College after winning the first game, 20-12, before losing the second game, 14-11 on Saturday.
The Chaparrals finished the regular season with a 28-14 overall record and an 18-6 mark to finish second in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference.
MC will next start NJCAA Region V Tournament play on May 7 with the first-round opponent and location still to be announced.
Luke Bumpus drove in seven runs to lead the Chaparrals to the win in the first game. The freshman outfielder was 4-for-5 with a triple, two home runs and three runs scored for the Chaps, who had 19 hits in the wild game.
MC had as much as a 13-0 lead before Clarendon rallied with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Also for MC, Tyler Wulfert was 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, an RBI and four runs scored; Jarred Gibson was 3-for-3 with a double, four RBI and three runs scored; Chris Garcia had two doubles, while Caleb Heuertz and Gibrian Pena each added two hits.
Alizaeh Gutierrez got the win after allowing just two hits with three walks and four strikeouts over four shutout innings.
In the final game, Clarendon jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and then held off the Chaps as the Bulldogs pounded out 14 hits.
MC had nine hits, led by Jarek Wells, who was 3-for-5 with a home run, five RBI and a run scored. Colby Standard was 2-for-4 with a home run, two walks, four RBI and three runs scored; and Adam Love added two hits.
