MIDLAND, TEXAS - The Midland College Chaps baseball team narrowly missed out on an opportunity to host the NJCAA Region 5 "Regional" Tournament in the cozy confines of Christensen Stadium. The Chaps finished the conference slate of games in second place; two games behind Howard College.
This year only the conference champions in the WJCAC and NTJCAC host the regional round of the 2021 post-season for a four-team, double-elimination tournament. McLennan Community College won the Northern Conference title this season.
Waco Regional teams are N1 McLennan (37-16), W2 Midland (28-14), N3 Temple (37-14) and W4 Odessa (21-24).
Big Spring Regional teams are W1 Howard College (37-11), N2 Weatherford College (36-18), W3 Clarendon College (30-20) and N4 Cisco College (40-14).
Midland College is scheduled to take on Temple College on Friday, May 14th at a time to be announced. The Chaps and Leopards faced one another in a three-game series in late February. Temple won two of the three games on their home field.
The Chaparrals have taken a few days to rest and practice in preparation for the Regional Tournament. The time off allowed coaches Rodriguez, Fanning and Blessie to align their pitching staff for the three-day tournament grind in Waco.
The winners of the Waco and Big Spring Regionals will face off in a best of three game "Super Regional" Tournament (May 21-23) with the winner qualifying for the 2021 NJCAA Division I Baseball Tournament (May 29-June 5) in Grand Junction, CO.
