BASEBALL: Chaps split Sunday DH at NMJC but win series

HOBBS, NEW MEXICO - The Midland College baseball team split its Sunday doubleheader at New Mexico Junior College but still won the weekend series.
The Chaparrals won the first game, 9-5, before falling 16-12 in the series finale at Ray Birmingham Field.
The Chaps (16-7, 3-1 in Western Junior College Athletic Conference) still took three out of the four games against the Thunderbirds (18-10, 1-3).
In the first game, MC used a six-run top of the first to spark the win.
Tyler Wulfert hits his third home run in the series and was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI for MC. Garrett Williams was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored; Luke Bumpus was 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI and a run scored; Michael Weidner had two hits, RBI and a run scored; and Frayner Chavez drove in two runs.
Luis Rodriguez got the win after he allowed five runs on 12 hits, walked one and struck out five over 6 1/3 innings.
Both teams had 15 hits in the second game and NMJC used a six-run bottom of the eighth to pull away. The T-birds also hit six home runs, led by Kade Benavidez with two blasts.
Chris Garcia was 4-for-4 with an RBI and four runs scored to lead the Chaps at the plate. Chavez was 2-for-4 with a triple, two walks and five RBI; Hudson Parker was 2-for-4 with a double, walk, two RBI and two runs scored; Tyler Wulfert was 3-for-5 with a walk, RBI and two runs scored; and Williams drove in two runs.
Matthew Sandoval took the loss in relief.
MC next hosts Western Texas College in a non-conference game at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Christensen Stadium.
