BASEBALL: Chaps sweep doubleheader, win series

BORGER, TEXAS -The Midland College baseball team swept a doubleheader at Frank Phillips College on Friday to win the Western Junior College Athletic Conference series.
The Chaparrals won 8-1 in the first game before winning a 19-13 slugfest in the series finale. MC (30-15, 17-7 in WJCAC) took three out of four games from the Plainsmen (13-28, 16-18).
The Chaps got a strong outing from starting pitcher Luis Rodriguez in the first game as he allowed the one run on five hits and four walks and also struck out 10 in a complete-game performance.
Odessa High grad Gibrian Pena homered and drove in three runs to lead the Chaps' offense. Lee grad Michael Weidner also homered and drove in two runs.
In the second game, MC had 14 hits to overcome three errors. Roman Thompson led the Chaps by going 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs and five RBI. Pena was 2-for-3 with a triple, two walks, four RBI and three runs scored; Chris Garcia had two doubles and two RBI; Midland Christian grad Rhett Clark had a double, home run and two RBI; and Luke Bumpus was 3-for-5 with a double, walk, two RBI and two runs scored.
Aaron Molina picked up the win in relief.
The Chaps next host Odessa College in a non-conference game at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
