SNYDER, TEXAS - The Midland College baseball team split a doubleheader at Western Texas College on Saturday, winning 13-3 before losing 8-4 in the finale.
With the split, the Chaparrals (34-16, 20-8 in Western Junior College Athletic Conference) won the series, 3-1, and will go into the final weekend of the regular season in good position to win a league title.
The Chaps used an eight-run fifth inning and had 15 hits in the five-inning, run-rule victory in the first game.
Six of the nine Chaps in the lineup had multiple hits, led by Roman Thompson, who was 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Western Texas (29-18, 18-10) had a 5-0 lead for most of the game before the Chaps rallied with four runs in the seventh and ninth innings to cut it to 5-4. But the Westerners put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the eighth.
WTC starter Reese Weaks did a good job of holding down a potent MC offense that had been averaging 13 runs a game in the series.
Aaron Oropeza led the Chaps by going 3-for-4 with three RBI from the No. 9 hole. Thompson had a double and a solo home run; while Clark had a double and a run scored.
