MIDLAND, TEXAS - Midland College shortstop and Midland Christian grad Cody Grebeck is going to play for one of the nation's most consistently performing collegiate baseball programs in 2024.
Grebeck announced last week on Twitter that he has committed to play for Dallas Baptist University, a Division I baseball program in the Missouri Valley Conference.
The 5-foot-9, 150-pound Grebeck has pledged to a Patriots program that has played in the NCAA Tournament in eight straight years, has played in the NCAA Regional in 10 of the last 14 years, and has nine 40-win seasons in the last 11 years.
DBU was attractive for Grebeck, who was a freshman during the 2022 season at Baylor before transferring to MC for the 2023 season.
"It was just a great fit," Grebeck said. "I was at Baylor my freshman year and I got to be at a big program and just seeing the way DBU does everything, it shows why they're one of the best schools in the country."
Grebeck was recruited by DBU assistant coach Cliff Pennington, who played the 2007 and 2008 seasons for the RockHounds before playing in parts of 11 big league seasons with Oakland, Arizona, Toronto, the Los Angeles Angels and Cincinnati.
"Just what Coach (Dan) Heefner and Cliff do there, it's a lot different than most programs," Grebeck said. "They're very hands on and there's a reason why they are so good."
Grebeck, who led Midland Christian to the 2021 TAPPS Division I state championship, was limited to only 12 at-bats during his freshman year with Baylor.
The Bears went 26-28 and 7-17 in conference, which led to the resignation of head coach Steve Rodriguez.
"It was an interesting year," Grebeck said. "Obviously, things didn't go as planned. It was cool to experience that program in the Big 12."
Grebeck entered the transfer portal during the summer, and he said he had opportunities to play Division I baseball at Wichita State, the University of California, Santa Barbara and Seattle University.
He ultimately decided that playing a year with the Chaps would be best for his career.
"This summer it was kind of a hard decision on whether I wanted to go back to Division I or go junior college," Grebeck said. "And then everyone I talked to, the experience you get at the junior college level, it seemed like the right place to be. I did it and it worked out."
"It's good," Grebeck added about playing for MC. "I've gotten what I've wanted. I get a lot of at-bats. It's a really group of guys. I have nothing to complain about."
