MIDLAND, TEXAS - After going 3-1 last weekend at Clarendon College, MC Chaparrals baseball returns to the cozy, manicured, pastoral confines of Christensen Stadium for a four-game series versus the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen. The Chaps nearly achieved a weekend sweep versus the Clarendon Bulldogs. Midland College, 25-6 in 2023 and 11-5 in the conference received impressive pitching performances by several members of the staff, led by Tyler Boudreau's no-hitter in the first game against Clarendon. The single loss, by a score of 11-10, to CC dropped the Chaps two games behind WJCAC leader New Mexico Junior College.
The Chaparrals expect solid starting pitching in the FPC series from Boudreau, Alizaeh Gutierrez and Evan Herbert with appearances by Matt Guthmiller, Zeigan Farley and Aaron Molina. Midland College shortstop Cody Grebeck will return to the lineup after remaining in Midland to recover from injury over last weekend. Offensively Midland College's Xavier Melendez' .495 batting average leads the Chaps and places him 4th nationally in the stat. Redshirt freshman Justin Rumfield along with sophomore's Rhett Clark and Hudson Parker are hitting .400, .391 and .379 in 2023.
The action begins on Thursday with a noon double-header following by a second twinbill on Saturday, also at noon. All four games to be played at Christensen Stadium. MC and FPC coaches agreed to move the games up a day in order to allow their teams an additional day of rest over the Easter weekend.
