MIDLAND, TEXAS - Midland College baseball coach Hector Rodriguez said some players are just ready to hit when they come off the bus. Xavier Melendez seems to be one of those players.
The freshman first baseman and Odessa Permian grad has made an impact in his first year with the Chaparrals as he leads the team with a .423 batting average to go with six home runs and 45 RBI, usually batting in the middle of the order.
Melendez will look to get some more clutch hits when the No. 2-seed Chaps (41-13) open the NJCAA Region V Baseball Tournament at 10 a.m. Friday against defending Region V champion McLennan Community College (38-18) at Weatherford's Roger Williams Ballpark ...
