Sophomore Day (Saturday, May 4, 2024)
Midland, TX
The Midland College baseball holds their WJCAC title chances in their own hands as they enter the final WJCAC series of the season. MC is currently tied for first place in the conference standings, along with the NMJC Thunderbirds, at 28-4 headed into the final four games of he regular season, Friday at Western Texas College in Snyder, then Saturday versus WTC at Christensen Stadium. Despite the having the same record MC would hold the tiebreaker if the two teams finish the weekend with identical records. Midland College took three of four games last weekend versus the Thunderbirds, splitting two games on Friday in Hobbs, then winning both games in Midland on Saturday.
Midland College looks to control the outcome as they play Friday's double-header in Snyder at Western Texas College, then the Chaps will seek to close out the weekend with games at Christensen Stadium in Midland. Western Texas College is currently 19-31 overall and 12-20 in the WJCAC. New Mexico Junior College will close the regular season with two games at Hobbs, NM on Friday and the season-ending double-header on Saturday at Odessa College. Odessa College sits in fifth place in conference at 16-16, one game behind Howard College and one game ahead of El Paso Community College. As the regular season draws to an end, seven of the 10 WJCAC teams remain mathematically alive for a post-season berth.
Saturday's games in Midland will be the final home games in the MC baseball careers of 14 outstanding members of the team. Midland College sophomores Jake Martinez, Kyle Lewis, Carson Laws, Brock Tijerina, Trace Holcomb, Tyler Boudreau, Cody Edwards, Caden Cline, Blake Hollingshead, Justin Rumfield, Daniel Bass, Xavier Melendez, Holt Gibson and Matt Guthmiller each will be taking to the Christensen Stadium field for the final time as members of the MC Chaps baseball team. Join us as we recognize these young men in a ceremony between games one and two on Saturday, May 4th.
