The Midland College Chaparrals found themselves in a bit of a hole after Thursday's series opening loss to Hill College. The Chaps advanced to the NJCAA Southwest District Playoffs by winning the WJCAC regular season title. Midland College faced off against Hill College, in the first round of the Southwest District playoffs, in a three-game series at Christensen Stadium. Hill finished as the fourth place team in the NTJCAC this season.
The Chaps opened the three-game "regional" series on Thursday with Logan Flores on the bump. Flores has been one of the work horses of the pitching rotation this year with an umblemished record. Flores went 7.1 innings, giving up seven hits and striking out seven. Chap centerfielder Brennan McTavish was spectacular at the plate, going 2-4, with four RBI in the disappointing 10-8 loss.
Game two the Chaps received strong performances from starting pitcher Jason Berglund and relief pitcher Clayton Norrell, who combined to strikeout seven Hill College batters. Freshmen outfielders Caiden Olivas and Cole Neatherland along with McTavish, provided the offense needed to secure the win in game #2 by a score of 10-7. The win knotted the series at 1-1 headed into Saturday's "rubber match".
Saturday, the Chaps jumped out to an early lead after a Bammer Maes homerun in the second inning. Midland College's Luke Hayhow was outstanding on the mound, going seven complete innings and striking out 11 Hill College batters. Midland College hitters provided consistent and relentless production at the plate in the Chaps 8-0 seventh inning run rule win. The win continues Midland College's season an improved their season record to 47-10.
Next for the Chaps is the 2026 NJCAA Southwest District "Super Regional" Tournament in Weatherford, TX (hosted by Weatherford College). The Super Regional tournament field is comprised of #1 seed Midland College (W1), #2 seed Weatherford College (N2), #3 seed McLennan Community College (N3) and fourth seed Howard College (W4).
Midland College is scheduled to play fellow WJCAC member Howard College on Thursday, May 14th @ 3:00 p.m. Howard College pulled off an unlikely upset of NTJCAC Champion, Grayson College, coming from eight runs down in game three of their series to win 13-11.
