HUTCHINSON, KANSAS - After receiving a top eight seed and a first-round bye in the National Tournament the Midland College Chaparrals basketball team will open play versus the Chipola College (FL) Indians. Chipola College of NJCAA Region 8 currently sits at 29-4 this season, including a decisive 99-66 win over hapless Cape Fear Community College (NC), in a first-round tournament game on Monday. Cape Fear CC from NJCAA Region 10 won their district playoff tournament to enter the national tournament with a 15-13 record.
The Chipola win sets the stage for tomorrow game between the Chaparrals and the Indians in a rematch of the 2007 NJCAA national championship game. Midland College (27-6) and Chipola College will square off on Tuesday, March 21st @ 4:30 p.m. (CT) at the Hutchinson (KS) Sports Arena in Hutchinson, KS.
The Chipola College Indians received strong performances from Cliff Davis and Zach Bell with 23 points and 15 points respectively versus Cape Fear CC. 13 Chipola players saw action in the contest with none playing more than 23 minutes versus the Cape Fear Sea Devils. Davis is Chipola's leading scorer this season at 11.1 ppg. In addition to Davis, the Indians have four players who average approximately 10 points per contest. That balanced attack has served the team well in 2023.
Despite having no common opponents this year the Chaparrals coaching staff is very familiar with Chipola. Current MC assistant coach, James Demopoulos, came to Midland after a stint on the Chipola College men's basketball coaching staff.
All games from the 2023 NJCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament will be broadcast from the NJCAA Network at www.njcaa.org/network. There is a charge to watch the games.
