MC Chaps Basketball Upsets #2 South Plains, Narrowly Misses Post-Season Berth

The Midland College Chaparrals closed out the 2024 season with an upset road win versus #2 ranked South Plains College at Levelland. With the win Midland College improves to 20-10 on the season and 9-7 in the WJCAC. Despite the upset victory, the Chaps will miss out on an NJCAA Region 5 Tournament berth due to a tie-breaker.
The Chaparrals and New Mexico Junior College recorded identical conference records, however the Thunderbirds held a two wins to zero head-to-head, tiebreaker over Midland College.
With eight seconds left in the contest the Texans led the contest 69-67, SPCs Malique Ewin missed both freethrows, the Chaps corraled the rebound and pushed it over halfcourt. MC's Emilis Butkus received the ball, pulling up for a desperate three-pointer that swished through the net as the horn sounded. Midland College picked up the 70-69 win to secure their 20th win of the season. Butkus led all scorers in the game with 23 points in his final Midland College game.
