The Midland College Chaps basketball team took on Permian Basin rival, Odessa College, in the 2025 WJCAC opener at the OC Sports Center on Monday, January 6th. The Wranglers are ranked #19 in the most recent NJCAA Men's Division I Basketball poll.
Despite being without two key members of the team (Robert Dix and Kendall Alexander) due to injuries and without head coach Tra Arnold (illness) the Chaparrals led throughout the game. Midland College lead by as many as 14 points late in the game, only to see the Wranglers mount a comeback down the stretch. Midland College emerged with a 71-63 win at Odessa College to improve to 11-4 overall and 1-0 in conference.
The difference in the game was Midland College's ability to get to the free throw line, going 31-43 (72.1%) versus OC's 22-30 (73.3%). Neither team efficiently scored from the three-point line with the Chaps going 4-18 (22.2%) and the Wranglers going 3-26 (11.5%).
Chap sophomore Trey Clarke (Far Rockaway, NY) lead all scorers with 23 points while MC's James Johnson (Chicago, IL) pulled down 10 caroms to lead in rebounds.
The conference schedule doesn't get any easier for the Chaps with upcoming games against #10 Howard College on Thursday, January 9th and #18 Frank Phillips College a week later. Both the Howard College and Frank Phillips College games will be played at the Al G. Langford Chaparrals Center in Midland.
