The Midland College Chaparrals improved to 19-1 this season after defeating New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, NM. The Chaps also improved to 5-1 in the WJCAC, tied for first place with the Howard College Hawks through six conference games. In the most recent NJCAA Men's Division I Basketball poll, MC moved up to 5th place nationally after dropping to 7th a week prior. Midland College defeated NMJC by a score of 87-78 in a game that was hotly contested from the opening tipoff. The Chaparrals were led by Darius Carr who scored a game-high 24 points versus the Thunderbirds.
Next on the schedule for the Chaps is a trip to Snyder and a matchup with Western Texas College. The Westerners are currently 10-10 overall and 2-4 in conference. WTC is expected to offer strong opposition to MC, especially in the confines of the Scurry County Coliseum.
Midland College's Carr, Antoine Bo Hurns and freshman guard Cayden Reed each average in double-figures with fellow freshman, Yeison Liberato coming in at just under 10 points per game. Following tonight's game at Western Texas, the Chaparrals will face a very strong Howard College Hawks team on Monday, February 2nd in Midland.
The Hawks are currently 18-2 this season and ranked sixth nationally, including 5-1 in the WJCAC. Howard College was forced to play a Tuesday night game in Big Spring against Clarendon College (an 83-64 win over the Bulldogs). HC will host #11 ranked South Plains College tonight, also in Big Spring, followed by a Monday, February 2nd game at Midland College's Al G. Langford Chaparrals Center.
The Hawks, along with all the other WJCAC teams, moved their games from Monday to Tuesday due to cold and icy weather which limited the opportunity for teams to safely travel to their respective destinations. Midland College for their part enjoyed an "open" date in the schedule and didn't not have a game on Monday or Tuesday.
