RUIDOSO, NEW MEXICO - The Midland College Chaps "A" team finished day one of the High Country College Shootout four-strokes ahead of a formidable New Mexico Junior College "A" team with 36-hole scores of 531 (-45) and 535 (-41) respectively.
Midland College "B" is also in contention for the tournament championship, shooting a two round team score of 538 (-38) on the event's first day.
The final day of the tournament promises to be a test of wills as many of the top individual performers will be matched up head-to-head in the last 18-holes of the event.
The team title remains in doubt with three teams within striking distance of the Midland College "A" team, including NMJC "A", Midland College "B" and Odessa College "A" each within 13 strokes of one another.
Midland College's Aston Castillo (MC "A") surged to a first round score of 62 (-10) to lead the medalist race after 18 holes. Not to be outdone, MC's Samual McKenzie (MC "A") shot a blistering 61 (-11) in the day's second round to move ahead in the medalist race after 36 holes.
McKenzie leads the tournament with scores of 65-61--126 (-18) while Castillo's second round score of 69 (-3) posted a first day score of 131 (-13). Castillo currently sits in a tie for third place in the event.
The tournament concludes with an 18-hole final round to be played on Monday.
