ODESSA, TEXAS - After spending much of the season ranked as the #1 team in the NJCAA the Midland College golf team hopes to top off the year with a national title when they take on the nation's best teams at the 2022 NJCAA Men's Division I Golf Tournament.
The Chaps, led by head coach Walt Williams, ranked first nationally according to the NJCAA and Golfstat.Com, will face considerable resistance from the likes of #2 Central Alabama CC, #3 Hutchinson CC (defending national champion), #4 Odessa College, #5 Eastern Florida, #6 New Mexico JC, #7 Iowa Western CC and #8 McLennan CC. Odessa College will chase the title from the relative comfort and familiarity of playing their home course; the Odessa Country Club Links Course.
The Chaparrals have been playing well of late but the absence of freshman Gregor Graham, due to injury, only adds to the uncertainty for the team as they seek to win the national title. Among MC's top performers this year are Adam Coull (Australia), Angel Guerra (Mexico), Samual McKenzie (Republic of South Africa), Jason "JT" Pittman (Monahans, TX), Bladen Sanmaniego (Lubbock, TX) and Aston Castillo (Lubbock, TX) which will make selecting the tournament team a difficult choice for Williams.
The Odessa Country Club Links is a private, 18 hole course (par 72, 7388 yards) with a rating of 72.5 and a slope rating of 130. This is a links-style course perfectly suited to the West Texas winds. The course features mounded fairways and the style of fast greens suited to the more advanced golfer. The former Nike Tour hosted a tournament here throughout the 1990s.
