GOLF: Midland College Seeks to Put Pieces Together at the Southwest Championships

MIDLAND, TEXAS - The Midland College golf team has displayed both overall brilliance and untapped potential in 2023. The Chaparrals, ranked #3 nationally in both the NJCAA and Golfstat.com polls, have four top three tournament finishes during the spring semester, including two team titles. In their two most recent events both NCAA Division I tournaments the Chaps have finished in 3^rd and 7^th places respectfully at The Big Texan Invitational (hosted by UTRGV) and the Huntsville Toyota Invitational (hosted by Sam Houston State University). Midland College is seeking to play up to their potential in next week's Southwest Junior College Championships.

The Southwest JUCO brings together the top two-year college teams from Texas and New Mexico for 54-holes (three round) of top flight men's golf. Expected to be in the tournament field are #2 New Mexico Junior College, #6 Odessa College, #8 Western Texas College, #10 Ranger College, #11 McLennan Community College, #16 Blinn College and #20 Tyler Junior College.

The Chaparrals team is led by sophomore transfer Chris Wardrup who is #8 nationally in the individual two-year college rankings. Freshman Jack Cubitt of the Chaps is ranked #12 followed by fellow first-year players Max Cavazos and Thomas Vestergaard who are ranked #15 and #16 according to Golfstat.com.

MC Coach Walt Williams has followed a strategy of placing the team in situations of high-level competition and high-stress. Playing against NCAA Division I level teams has been a formula for success in preparing the team for the rigors of post-season events including the NJCAA National Tournament. First the Chaps will need to put together three solid rounds of play over two days in Brownwood.
