Coastal Bend College vs. Midland College
Lady Chaps Field
The Midland College softball improved to 15-4 this season, including the current 11 game win streak when they defeated Coastal Bend College in a three-game set at Lady Chaps Field on Friday, February 21 and Saturday, February 22. Due to the cold weather the teams decided to play one game on Friday and a double-header on Saturday, rather than two double-headers.
The Lady Chaps demonstrated their offensive potential in Friday's 17-2, five inning run-rule game. MC recorded 14 hits in the win with Karissa Garcia and Angelina Lara recording three RBI each. Pitcher Tessia Guzman (4-2) picked up the five inning win limiting the Cougars to five hits. Guzman posted four strikeouts in the game.
Both teams worked through Saturday's cold morning temperatures in what was a much more competitive contest despite the five-inning run rule. MC's Marissa Espinoza went 3-3 at the plate with one RBI. Maycee Wilson and Emma Davis each recorded three RBI to lead the Lady Chaps in the 9-1 win. Sophomore Katelynn Perez (4-1) picked up the win from the circle surrendering two hits and recording eight strikeouts.
The series finale, on Saturday, was the most competitive game of the weekend. It was an old-fashioned pitcher's duel between freshman Marie Rondeau of the Lady Chaps and sophomore Sophia Garza of the Coastal Bend Cougars. Garza, the younger sister of MC assistant coach Liv Garza, threw exceptionally well in her first start of the season, following a period of injury recovery. Rondeau (6-1) continued her recent command with eight strikeouts while giving up five hits and three walks. Midland College needed the entire seven innings to defeat Coastal Bend College by a score of 2-0.
Midland College will travel to Abilene for two games versus McMurry University on Tuesday, February 25th beginning at 3:00 p.m.
Go Lady Chaps!
