Howard College Hawks vs. Midland College Lady Chaps
April 11-April 12, 2025
Midland, TX
Headed into last weekend's four-game conference series versus Howard College, Midland College head coach Angel Castro had a few concerns based on the week's practices. Castro was not pleased with the team's efforts and lack of attention to detail in preparation for the Hawks. When the dust settled, Castro's concerns were put to rest as the Lady Chaps swept the Hawks 4-0. In the process the Lady Chaps outscored Howard College 22-2 to improve to 35-4 on the season and 10-0 in the WJCAC. Midland College has two make-up games with Frank Phillips College due to unplayable field conditions in Midland on Friday, April 4th.
Castro's feelings about the team's preparedness appeared to be warranted during Friday's first game at Lady Chaps Field. MC jumped out to an early lead after posting two runs in the bottom of the first and one additional run in the bottom of the second inning. Midland College recorded three of their total five hits in the first two innings. After that point the Lady Chaps' bats fell silent. Lady Chaps starting pitcher, Katelynn Perez, successfully held the Hawks to four total hits in the game. The sophomore from Los Fresnos, TX was masterful in the circle striking out 11 Howard batters over seven innings. The Hawks scored one run in the fourth inning and one more in the seventh to pull to within one run when the game ended. Final score MC 3, HC 2.
In the remaining three games of the series, including game #2 in Midland on Friday and Saturday's double-header in Big Spring, Midland College dominated Howard College with scores of 11-0 (5 innings), 10-0 (6 innings) and 8-0 (5 innings) to take the series. MC's pitching duo of Katelynn Perez and Marie Rondeau improved their records to 13-1 and 12-1 respectively.
On the horizon for the Lady Chaps #9 ranked Odessa College Wranglers. The MC vs. OC four-game WJCAC series may well decide the eventual conference champion and will help to decide which team will host the upcoming NJCAA Region 5 Softball Tournament (May 7-9). Please note games one and two will be played in Odessa on Thursday, April 17th @ 1:00 p.m. and games three and four of the series will be played at Lady Chaps Field on Friday, April 18th @ 1:00 p.m.
The Region 5 Tournament format has been reconfigured and will be played at two separate sites: One hosted by the WJCAC champion and one hosted by the NTJCAC champion. Each of the two tournament sites will feature a four-team field playing a double-elimination format over three days.
The MC vs. OC series promises to be a clash of the WJCAC titans with Odessa College ranked in the nation's top 10 and a 31-4 season record, including 12-0 in conference. Midland College sits at 35-4 on the season and 10-0 in the WJCAC, however, MC will travel to Cisco for a double-header on Tuesday before the weekend's series versus the Wranglers. Midland College is riding 31-game win streak as they head to Cisco College.
