MIDLAND, TEXAS - Brooke Galvin's Midland College teammates did the smart thing of getting the ball to the 5-foot-4 sophomore guard in the third quarter of Friday night's game of the Women's National Invitation Tournament at Chaparral Center.
Galvin hit two of her five 3-pointers and scored eight of her game-high 19 points in that key quarter that sparked the Lady Chaparrals to a nice early-season 69-60 victory over No. 23-ranked Hill College.
The win for the Lady Chaps (6-1) helps to erase some of the frustrations of an 84-77 loss to No. 6 Trinity Valley Community College the night before. While MC still has a way to go to be where it wants, the win helped to boost the team's confidence the early part of the season.
"The feeling of a loss is not fun," Galvin said. "I don't think we wanted to feel it again, so we've got dialed in, focused and went after it."
MC coach Ron Jones acknowledged that it's still early in the season and there are a lot of possessions that could be better for his team.
"I'm not going to make excuses but the only scrimmaging that we've done in the last three weeks because of our health is during a game," Jones said. "We don't have enough to work on, so we talk, we teach and work on some other stuff. We're not getting the reps. That would help to have a few more reps. We got reps tonight and we'll get reps (today)."
MC took a 34-29 lead at halftime and then added to its lead in the third quarter when Galvin sparked a 15-point period with her eight points.
"I was confident in my team, I knew they were going to get me the ball when I needed it," Galvin said.
"I liked the way we moved the ball," Galvin added. "We've got to do better defensively, blocking, working as a team, but other than that I think we did pretty good offensively."
Added Jones: "I liked the shots that we took. I don't think we shot many contested shots from the outside. Brooke hit some. I'm more concerned about if we're not getting the right shots than I am if they're going in. Yes, I want every one of them to go in, but I kind of evaluate offense by what kind of shots we're getting."
In addition to Galvin's night, Bella Green had a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds, while Teanna Huggins added nine points and six boards.
Laylah Davis and Brandalyn Rice each had 16 points for Hill (4-3).
The Lady Chaps next host Weatherford College at 4 p.m. Saturday to close out the WNIT.
