MIDLAND, TEXAS - With the 2022 regular season in the books, the Lady Chaps basketball team has qualified for the post-season and the NJCAA Region 5 Basketball Tournament at the Tiger Pit at Frenship High School in Wolfforth, Texas. The Region 5 Basketball Tournament is scheduled for March 2nd-5th
Midland College, 20-6 overall, enters the Tournament as the #2 seed after finishing as runner-up in the WJCAC race, one game behind New Mexico Junior College. The Lady Chaps are ranked #19 in the February 22nd national poll, while NMJC is ranked #7.
Qualifying teams in the Region 5 Tournament, from the WJCAC are W1 NMJC, W2 MC, W3 South Plains College and W4 Clarendon College. Teams from the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference are #1 seed Hill College (NTJCAC Champion), #2 seed Grayson College, #3 seed Temple College and #4 seed Weatherford College.
Wednesday's first round games are: @ 1:00 p.m. W4 Clarendon vs. N1 Hill, @ 3:00 p.m. W2 Midland vs. N3 Temple, @ 5:00 p.m. W3 South Plains vs. N2 Grayson and @ 7:00 p.m. W1 New Mexico Junior College vs. N4 Weatherford

The Temple College Leopards enter the Region 5 Tournament with an 18-10 overall record. Temple and Midland have each played Ranger, Weatherford and Hill Colleges. Temple went 1-1 versus Ranger, 2-0 versus Weatherford and 0-2 versus Hill College. The Lady Chaps went 1-0 versus Ranger, 1-1 versus Weatherford and 1-0 versus Hill.
Temple College averages 76.9 points (FG% 35.8, 3PT% 26.5, FT% 66.6), 43.2 rebounds (15.2 OFF, 28.0 DEF) and 19.8 assists. The Leopards are led by sophomore guard Jordyn Carter and freshman Leilani Wimbush-Gay with 16.4 and 12.2 points per contest respectively. Sophomore Kennedi Green and Kirsten Zaruba each chip in with double-figure scoring this season. Wimbush-Gay also leads the team with 8.1 rebounds per game while Carter averages 6.0 assists this season.
The Lady Chaps average 66.3 points (FG% 39.5, 3PT% 27.3, FT% 74.7), 38.3 rebounds (11.8 OFF, 38.3 DEF) and 11.9 assists per game. Midland College is led offensively by the trio of Bella Green (14.3 ppg), Makayla Escue (11.8 ppg) and Dana Thompson (10.7 ppg). Green and Thompson lead the team in rebounds at 9.4 and 8.6 caroms per contest this season.
