BASKETBALL: Clarendon upsets Lady Chaps at Region V tourney
A strong start by Clarendon College propelled the Lady Bulldogs to an 80-71 upset of No. 19-ranked Midland College in the semifinal round of the NJCAA Region V Tournament at Frenship’s Tiger Pit on Friday afternoon.

WOLFFORTH, TEXAS - A strong start by Clarendon College propelled the Lady Bulldogs to an 80-71 upset of No. 19-ranked Midland College in the semifinal round of the NJCAA Region V Tournament at Frenship's Tiger Pit on Friday afternoon.
Clarendon (24-8) jumped out to a 21-11 lead in the first quarter and had a 36-28 lead at the half.
The Lady Chaparrals (21-7) were held to 36% shooting for the game and were out-rebounded 52-49 by the more aggressive Lady Bulldogs, who had lost both games to MC during Western Junior College Athletic Conference play by an average of 27.5 points per game.
Makayla Escue led MC with a game-high 26 points, Dana Thompson had 13 points and nine rebounds, and Teanna Huggins added 11 points.
Aileen Marquez led five Clarendon players in double figures with 24 points. Autum Wadsworth added 15 points, Mah Minthe had 11 points and 11 rebounds, while JoJo Munroe and Mariam Traore each had 10 points.
Clarendon moves on to Saturday's 2 p.m. championship game where the winner gets the automatic bid to the NJCAA national tournament.
MC will have to wait and see if it gets an at-large bid to the national tournament.
