MIDLAND, TEXAS - The Midland College women's basketball team remains a work in progress, although for head coach Ron Jones that progress is coming along a lot slower than he would like.
The Lady Chaparrals struggled on the offensive end by shooting just 20% from the floor and committing 21 turnovers in a 69-51 loss to Dodge City Community College in the final day of the Midland College Tip-Off Classic on Saturday.
MC went 1-2 over the weekend and is now 1-5 on the season.
Janay Quinn led MC with a game-high 19 points with four made 3-pointers. Desiree Smith added 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Lady Chaps, who didn't enjoy many offensive highlights.
"We've got a lot of issues and I need to do a better job to put them in a place to be successful," Jones said. "In several of the games, we've shot the ball really poorly, and we did tonight. I need to reevaluate what I'm asking them to do.
"I'm the one making the practice schedule, so I will take all the blame for it."
After Dodge City (4-1) took an 18-11 lead in the opening quarter, the Conquistadors extended the lead to 37-18 by holding MC to just seven points in the second quarter.
"Getting out-competed, that's the number one thing," said Jones about a reason for his team's struggles on Saturday. "When you get out-competed, that starts with your mentality.
"I know how much we've taught them, but I don't know, maybe they don't understand. I don't really know. We'll keep working. I've never been in this position. Midland College has never been in this position, but nobody cares about that. I care about them showing up on the floor and competing at a high level."
Dodge City had three players score in double figures, led by Paris Santacaterina with 12 points off the bench. Jada Burton and Aujunae Latimer each had 10 points.
