BASKETBALL: Lady Chaps win OT thriller over Hawks

BIG SPRING, TEXAS - The Midland College women's basketball team opened Western Junior College Athletic Conference play with a 72-67 overtime win over Howard College at Big Spring's Dorothy Garrett Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.

Luisa Anderegg hit a 3-pointer to give the Lady Chaparrals (6-9, 1-0) the lead for good at 68-67 and then Janay Quinn closed it out by making four free throws in the final 20 seconds.

MC got off to a great start as it jumped out to an 18-9 lead in the opening quarter.

But Howard (9-7, 0-1) fought back in the second quarter to pull to within 28-26 at the half.

The game was close throughout the second half and the teams were tied at 59-all at the end of regulation.

Quinn finished with a team-high 16 points off the bench. Franka Kraus added 12 for MC, while Anderegg added 11 points. Savana Goodson chipped in with 10 rebounds to go with her seven points.

MC overcame shooting 28.4% from the floor and 22.2% from 3-point range by holding 54-42 rebounding advantage.

Malgorzata Byczkowska had a game-high 17 points for Howard, while Ann Mary Zachariah had 16.

The Lady Chaps next host Frank Phillips College at 5:45 p.m. Monday in their WJCAC home opener.
