MIDLAND. TEXAS - In what can only be considered as critical WJCAC match-ups both MC basketball teams return to the hardwood on Thursday evening when they host New Mexico Junior College at the Al G. Langford Chaparral Center.
The Lady Chaps and Lady Thunderbirds are scheduled to begin at 5:45 p.m. The Chaparrals and Thunderbirds are slated for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
Headed into the NMJC game the Lady Chaps will seek to put an end to a two-game losing streak and return to the level of play they exhibited in late January and early February. The Lady Chaps, 10-13 on the season including 5-4 in the conference, will need to give their best overall effort to defeat the Lady T-Birds who are 17-4 on the season and 6-2 in conference good for second place in the league. Midland College is currently tied for third place in conference.
Midland College is led by freshman point guard Janay Quinn at 11.2 points per game followed by fellow freshman Luisa Anderegg at 8.7 ppg and sophomore Desiree Smith who also averages 8.7 ppg. Smith and Anderegg contribute 9.5 and 5.3 rebounds per game, respectively.
The story is slightly different for the Chaparrals who seek to keep their current four-game win streak alive after defeating Frank Phillips College 75-65 on Monday evening in Borger. The Chaps suffered a mid-season slump where they lost four conference games consecutively immediately prior to their current run of wins.
Midland College improved their record to 20-4 this season and 6-4 in the WJCAC headed into Thursday's game versus the New Mexico Junior College Thunderbirds. MC sits in fifth place in the conference race ½ game behind third place Howard College.
Midland College is led by sophomores Doug Young, Keonte Jones and Trent Johnson. Young is scoring at a 22.0 ppg clip followed by Keonte Jones' 17.3 points per contest and Johnson's 9.8 points per game. Jones also leads the team with 6.4 per game. The Chaparrals are as close to being healthy as they have been in a matter of months with the expected return of Brison Waller to the lineup.
Go Lady Chaps!
