By Oscar LeRoy MIDLAND, TEXAS - The Midland College volleyball team will look to break a two-way tie for second place in the league standings when it hosts No. 14-ranked New Mexico Military Institute at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Chaparral Center. The Lady Chaparrals (16-8, 9-3 in Western Junior College Athletic Conference) are coming off an impressive straight-set victory over Frank Phillips College, 25-10, 25-5, 25-18, on Saturday for their third straight win. Zoe Fernandez had 15 kills, Miranda Acosta had 13 digs and Julia Kabala had 28 assists to lead the Lady Chaps. Linda Conceicao also recorded 1.5 blocks and now has 177 blocks in her career, placing her sixth all time in program history. NMMI (21-8, 9-3) is coming off a 22-25, 25-16, 25-11, 25-6 home victory over Western Texas College for its fourth straight win. NMMI libero Mio Yamamoto is one of the top defenders in the country as she is second in the NJCAA with 6.63 digs per set. MC will look to make it a season sweep against NMMI this season as the Lady Chaps won a five-set thriller in Roswell, New Mexico, on Oct. 1 as MC rallied from a two-set deficit. With only two matches left in the season, Wednesday's contest will be important for seeding in the NJCAA Region V West Tournament and to keep pace with first-place New Mexico Junior College, which sits one match ahead of MC and NMMI. MC will close out the regular season with a match at rival Odessa College at 2 p.m. Saturday. Follow Oscar on Twitter: @OLeRoy_MRT
