VOLLEYBALL: Lady Chaps look for new life at region tournament

By Oscar LeRoy MIDLAND, TEXAS -Midland College volleyball coach Tammie Jimenez hopes that the conference tournament breathes some new life into her team this weekend. The Lady Chaparrals (16-10) open up the NJCAA Region V West/WJCAC Volleyball Tournament against Frank Phillips College (16-12) at 6 p.m. CDT Friday. All matches will be played at New Mexico Military Institute's Cahoon Armory in Roswell. The winner of the tournament gets the automatic bid to the national tournament to be held Nov. 17-19 in West Plains, Missouri. If the Lady Chaps want to get to nationals, they're going to have turn things around from the end of the regular season. MC got swept in its last two matches against No. 14-ranked New Mexico Military Institute and against rival Odessa College last Saturday. "I am hoping this weekend will change their perspective on things," Jimenez said. "It's still a little bit of hit and miss with this team. Against Odessa College, we would go through stretches of executing well and looking like a confident team. But then we would go through periods where were making error after error. We need to level out instead of being too high or too low and try to make adjustments so we can be consistent and have a steady game. But more than the physical aspect, we need to be make sure everything is right between the ears, the mental part of it." MC and Frank Phillips split during the regular season. The Lady Plainsmen defeated the Lady Chaps in four sets in the Sept. 28 meeting in Borger, but MC played one its best matches of the season in a dominating 25-10, 25-5, 25-18 sweep at Chaparral Center on Oct. 22. Jimenez said it would be great if the Lady Chaps could replicate that last performance. "That would be outstanding if we could channel what we were thinking at that point and how we were performing as a team and as individuals and be better," she said. Jimenez said FPC is a tough team to play because it's constantly changing its lineup and rotation. She said her team must focus on executing well offensively and defensively. "We need to be consistent from point one until the end," she said.
