The Midland College Lady Chaps volleyball team looked to get off to a strong start as the conference slate of matches began. Wednesday night in the WJCAC opener the Ladies looked sharp and dominated Clarendon College in a three game sweep at the Al G. Langford Chaparral Center. Clarendon entered the match with an impressive record of 16-4.
MC entered the match with a 3-7 record, including a five-match losing streak. Unfortunately the injury bug has hit the team which left first-year head coach Kristina Gafford looking for a winning combination of players to face the CC Bulldogs. Midland College had been away from competition since September 6th, so it was important to play a strong match after the 12 day layoff.
Midland College surged ahead in each of the three sets, however in the night's first set, the Lady Chaps allowed Clarendon College to tighten up the score late. After a bit of back and forth, the Lady Chaps secured the first set 26-24. In the second and third sets, MC didn't waste any time jumping on the Bulldogs in each frame by identical scores of 25-14 to win the match 3-0.
MC freshman Ipek Kusoglu (Izmir, Türkiye) led the match in kills with 13 while sophomore setter Martyna Lubowicz (Opole, Poland) recorded 30 assists. Defensively the Lady Chaps were led by Ksenija Sokic (Novi Sad, Serbia) who chipped in with 14 digs.
Midland College posted 40 kills on 86 total attacks (.407), 36 assists, 12 service aces and 44 digs in a solid overall performance in front of an estimated 300 fans.
The Midland College volleyball team will next be in action on Saturday, September 21st when they travel to Amarillo College for a 2:00 p.m. tilt.
Go Lady Chaps!
